En Primeur 2009
Bordeaux Vintage Quality
“First, and most importantly, for some Médocs and Graves, 2009 may turn out to be the finest vintage I have tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux. From top to bottom, 2009 is not as consistent as 2005, but the peaks of quality in 2009 may turn out to be historic.
In broad, rather simplistic terms, 2009 is at its greatest in the Médoc and Graves, where it can often eclipse 2005 and 2000. St.-Emilion is less predictable, as 2005 remains the vintage of reference for this appellation. Pomerol follows a similar pattern to St.-Emilion. Some profound wines have been made, but overall, 2009 may just barely edge out 2008, and in the long term play runner-up to 2005 in both Pomerol and St.-Emilion. Yet, as the specific tasting notes clearly indicate, there are always exceptions to these broad generalities.” Robert Parker

Château Haut-Madrac, Cru Bourgeois - Haut Médoc £99
“This wine has a fresh red hue, rather sweet fruit on the nose, with red berries, chalk and violets. A supple style on the palate, quite gentle fruit, firm tannins and rather nice acids. Good. 15-16+/20” The Wine Doctor

his is sweet and beautiful, with a lovely combination of ripe tannins and pretty fruit. Full-bodied, but balanced and long. But the second sip, it really grabs you. One to look for. 24 percent Merlot, 70 Cabernet Sauvignon, 3 percent Cabernet Franc and 3 percent Petit Verdot.

Château Pontac-Lynch - Margaux £179
Stradling the two communes of Margaux and Cantenac, Chateau Pontac Lynch has long been in the shadow of its illustrious neighbours chateaux Margaux and Palmer. Of recent years it has started to show just what quality can be produced by these fine vineyards just a stones throw from the river. The tell-tale aromatics of Margaux are bright and full with a soft sweet, black fruit palate balanced by spicy notes and hints of cedar.
“A wine from the Borie-Manoux portfolio. A moderately dark hue here, with a rather meaty style of fruit too. A nicely supple character, with a touch of chewiness to the tannins. A firm grip, but direct acidity too. Lots of tannins in the finish. 15-16+/20” The Wine Doctor

Château Batailley – Pauillac £264
Year on year this is one of our customers’ favourite en primeur purchases and has the best price/value ratio of any Classed Growth.
"Currant and blackberry on the nose, with hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with big, chewy tannins. This is the biggest Batailley in years. Lots of improvement her." (James Suckling - Wine Spectator - April 2010)
92-95/100 Tasted at the château and UGC. Picking commenced with the Merlot on the 24th September, for the Cabernet we started on the 29th September, finishing on 11th October and the Petit Verdot the 12th October. A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this Batailley has a ripe nose of blackberry, black plum, sandalwood, mint and just a hint of white flowers. Not a huge intense nose, but much more refined, very Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded and quite supple tannins, yet good backbone as always on this Batailley. Very harmonious, insistent but gentle grip, a slightly powdery texture towards the finish lending a pleasurable sense of umami. Very focused and elegant towards the finish, classic in style and yet very “2009”. This has the potential to be a benchmark Batailley after bottling (just be prudent on the oak please!) Tasted March 2010.

Château La Croix du Casse – Pomerol £249
“A very strong effort, this attractive Pomerol offers up plenty of jammy black fruits intertwined with herbs, spice, and oak. Medium to full-bodied with no hard edges and a lush finish, it should be enjoyed over the next decade.” 88-90 Robert Parker
“Delicious berry, milk chocolate character on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. I like how it is held back and in a more reserved style. 93 percent Merlot and 7 percent Cabernet. Borie Manoux took it over in 2005.”
(James Suckling - Wine Spectator - April 2010) 90-93/100
